Flood situation critical in Kalaigaon due to overflown of

KALAIGAON: As a major part of the State continues to reel under flood water, the River Noa under Kalaigaon Revenue Circle in the Udalguri district has overflown due to incessant rain.

According to reports, more than 12 villages are under the grip of floods for the past five days in Kalaigaon revenue circle. In the Kalaigaon area, Noa River has overflown due to heavy rainfall for the past few days resulting in flash floods. Water entered several houses and about 100 families have not been able to cook their meals for the past five days. Moreover, the embankment along River Noa has given away under the mounting pressure of flood water and it was breached at several villages like Rupatal, Geruwa, Shagunbahi and No. Shinrimari.

The Kalaigaon-Udalguri road near Majarchuba was reeling under knee-deep water on Thursday and a portion of the road has been washed away. Even the other roads for alternative communication from Kalaigaon to Udalguri, namely Mekenzi was breached at Geruwa in front of Forest Beat Office on Thursday due to floods. The damage to roads, bridges and embankment has affected the day-to-day activities in Kalaigaon area. The vital communication link through the road Mekenzi to the district headquarter from Kalaigaon has been cut-off totally since the last five days. The major part of Kalaigaon revenue circle was also under knee-deep water along with the Ram Janaki Mandir, Inspection Bungalow and Kalaigaon Town LP School till Thursday. People alleged that no public representative visited the flood-affected areas to take any step to control the worse situation till now.

Moreover, villagers of these areas said that they demanded immediate repair of the old embankment of Noa River when several portions were ravaged by floods on the west and east sides of the river in Kalaigaon in 2022. But the authority concerned has not taken any step to repair the embankment. So, the embankment gave away under the pressure of flood waters and it has been damaged again. Knee-deep water was also seen on the main road, namely Mekenzi at Geruwa where the communication link has been cut-off totally.
