GUWAHATI: In a joint operation with the Customs division, the Assam Rifles on Tuesday discovered foreign cigarettes from Mizoram's Tlangsam hamlet worth Rs 1.57 crore, according to an official release.

Based on particular information, a team composed of Assam Rifles and Champhai from the customs department conducted the operations. The Assam Rifles squad found the things that had been abandoned in the Champhai district's General Area Tlangsam hamlet and on Zokhawthar Melbuk Road.

The seizures were made on January 17 during two different operations along the Indo-Myanmar Border, according to the official release.

The Serchipp Battalion of the 23 Sector Assam Rifles, operating under the direction of Inspector General Assam Rifles (East), "recovered 40 cases of cigarettes of foreign origin worth Rs. 52 lakhs in Tlangsam village and 70 cases of cigarettes of foreign origin worth Rs. 1.05 crore in Zokhawthar Melbuk in two separate operations along Indo-Myanmar Border on January 17, 2023," according to a statement.

According to the statement, the seized shipment was delivered to Customs Department Champhai on January 17 for additional legal actions.

"For the state of Mizoram along the Indo-Myanmar border, the ongoing smuggling of illegal goods is a major source of concern. Successfully launching such operations against the smuggling activities in Mizoram has earned the Assam Rifles the title of "Sentinels of the Northeast," It added.

In a separate incident, the Guwahati city police detained two drug dealers on Tuesday evening and seized a substantial amount of illegal heroin from their possession.

The Chandmari police caught Mantu Rahman, a drug distributor who was out and about selling drugs in his scooter with the registration number "AS 01 EA 4306," after receiving information from a credible source. Two packets of heroin were discovered by police after searching the scooter's baggage area.

Police later discovered two more packets and 60 heroin bottles when they searched his Ganesh Nagar residence. The police also stated that his brother Mintu Rahman was arrested after being found to be involved. The overall weight of the medications found is thought to be around 55 grammes.
