GUWAHATI: An on-duty forest official who was posted in the Daflong camp of Kaziranga National Park died with bullet injuries on Saturday later evening.

The deceased forest officials identified as Saikia were in the camp along with his two other officials.

A preliminary investigation has revealed that Saikia purportedly killed himself with his service rifle. However, police registered a case and started an investigation.

Earlier on 1989 Saikia has started working as Forest Guard.

Locals and family members have claimed that he had also made a phone call to his wife before shooting himself but no one has yet officially revealed why he took the extreme step.

Earlier, an incident of firing took place at Palhazi, under Barpeta Police Station in Barpeta district last night. It may be mentioned that a person identified as Alip Hussain of the same village allegedly informed the police that Shahrukh alias Muktar of the same village is involved in illegal trade. Later, two persons on a bike opened fire in front of Alip Hussain's house. Police suspect that Shahrukh alias Muktar was involved in the incident.

Police recovered three blank cartridges and two live cartridges from the place. The investigation is on. The police also seized an excavator and two tractors from Muktar's house.
