Former Assam Minister Abdul Muhib Mazumder passes away in Guwahati

GUWAHATI: Former Assam Minister, well-known lawyer and architect of the IMDT Act, Abdul Muhib Mazumder passed away at the Gauhati Medical College and & Hospital (GMCH) here at around 8.15am. He was undergoing treatment at the GMCH for last one month for age-related ailments. He was 89 at the time of his demise.

His mortal remains were taken to his Hatigaon residence from GMCH where his admirers, friends and relatives paid their last tributes. His body was also taken to the Rajiv Bhavan where party leaders and workers paid their last respects. His last rites was performed at the Islampur Kabristan.

Abdul Muhib Mazumder was born on August 20, 1932 in Hailakandi town. He completed his schooling from Government Victoria Memorial High School, Hailakandi, obtained his B.Sc (Hons) from Cotton College, Guwahati and then did his MA and LLB from Aligarh Muslim University.

Mazumder entered politics in the 1970s and represented the Hailakandi Assembly seat four times as MLA (Member of Legislative Assembly). He served as Minister for law, power and municipal administration from 1983-1985 in the Hiteswar Saikia government. He also served as a Cabinet Minister in the Irrigation department in the Prafulla Mahanta Cabinet from 1996 to 2001.

Mazumder also drafted the famous IMDT Act and was also a part of the drafting committee of the Assam Accord-1985.

Assam Governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi condoled the demise of the former Minister. In a statement Mukhi said, "I am deeply saddened to hear the demise of former minister, a well-known lawyer Abdul Muhib Muzumder. The death of a hard-working, committed and a dedicated person like him is a great loss to the society."

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also expressed his grief on the demise of the former Minister. He tweeted, "We are saddened by the loss of fomer minister and lawyer Abdul Muhib Mazumder. The contribution made by him in his long association with the society and politics of Assam will be remembered for long. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family."
