DOOMDOOMA: Former historic Assam Movement Leader, former general secretary, All Assam Students Union (AASU), undivided Dibrugarh District Committee and former teacher of Rupai High School, Buddheswar Sonowal (64) died on Saturday night at his Ouguri Bijoy Nagar, Rupaisiding residence. He was one of the members of the 20-member AASU delegation to New Delhi to hold talk with the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1980 and suffered jail term for some time during agitation. However, he resigned from all the posts of AASU in 1983 and subsequently became a member of Indian National Congress (INC). He served as general secretary of Tinsukia District Youth Congress.

After graduating from Doomdooma College in humanities, he became a teacher of Rupai High school since inception and attained his superannuation in 2019 after giving his service for long twenty-eight years of its non-provincialized period till 2013.

He was once the vice president of the Tippuk Gaon Panchayat (GP) after being elected as ward member of Ward No.9. He was also member of Rupai High School Management and Development Committee (SMDC) and was associated with a number of socio-cultural organisations of the locality. He is survived by his wife and two sons.

His death has cast a pall of gloom and was widely mourned by a number of socio-cultural organisations and individuals including AASU vice president Biniy Dube, Organisational Secretary Rana Sonar, AJYCP Joint Secretary Surajit Moran, Tinsukia District Journalists Association (TDJA) President Anuj Kalita and others.
