GUWAHATI: Bhaskarjyoti Mahanta, a former director general of police (DGP), was recently appointed the chief information commissioner of Assam.

Mahanta, who retired on January 31, 2023, has now taken on the new role. The appointment was made after Mahanta retired as DGP of Assam and was replaced by IPS officer Gyanendra Pratap Singh.

Mahanta was an Assam-Meghalaya cadre IPS officer from the 1988 batch, and he previously held the position of Director General of Border. His goodbye address demonstrated his reputation for outstanding service and dedication to the state police force.

During his departure march, Mahanta complimented every police officer who participated in the procession and conveyed his thanks towards the Assam police force. He continued by saying that he would always admire the Assam Police and that for every police officer, their work is more of a service than a job.

Additionally, he exhorted everyone to give Gyanendra Pratap Singh, the recently appointed DGP, their entire support.

Given his extensive background in public service, Mahanta's appointment as the Chief Information Commissioner is viewed as a significant development. Mahanta's nomination is intended to boost the operation of the state's information commission and bring transparency to government affairs.

Once Mahanta's term as director general of police (DGP) of Assam came to an end in January, GP Singh was chosen to replace him. Mahanta's retirement marked the conclusion of a distinguished career in public service, and his new post is considered a continuation of his services towards the state.

Partha Sarathi Mahanta, Deputy Inspector General of Police (Admn. ), has been appointed by the Assam government to serve as an extra Deputy Inspector General of Police for the Special Task Force (STF). The state government has never before created the position of deputy inspector general of police (STF).

Mahanta will carry the additional charge of Deputy Inspector General of Police (STF), in addition to his current responsibilities, as of the date of taking over the charge, according to a government notification. Mahanta was appointed as the Deputy Inspector General of Police earlier this month after being relieved of his duties as the Joint Commissioner of Police for Guwahati (Admn). Mahanta previously held the position of the state's DIG of Police (Armed Police). With his new position, he will have additional administrative responsibilities in addition to managing the Special Task Force.
