DIGBOI, July 31: Sensation gripped Digboi after a self-proclaimed BJP worker of ward III under Digboi Town Committee area (DTC) served a death threat over SMS to Bhaskar Jiban Baruah, the former chairman of DTC who has also been an active Congress leader and social worker of Digboi, on Monday afternoon. Congress workers along with Baruah lodged a police complaint on Monday evening against the self-proclaimed BJP worker Kabul Chowdhury of ward III who did not cite any reason in the message supporting his heinous and criminal act. However, the supporters of Baruah suspect that the act must be the design of saffron workers to mentally harass the Congress leader-cum-ward commissioner of ward III, who along with four others had moved the no-confidence motion against the present BJP chairperson Shipra Mallick recently, thereby creating turbulence in the BJP wing in Digboi.
According to Congress supporters, telephonic intimidation to an active Congress leader like Baruah bore clear testimony to the fact that the saffron party had much to worry with this move of the Congress and the way it was preparing for the election in 2019. Registering a case to this effect, the local police have started investigating into the case. Cases related to death threats over phone or SMSes have been lying unaddressed in the local police station over a period of time, said sources. It will be interesting to see if the police take necessary action in this case or not.
