Former Headmaster of Jhanji Girls High School Laksheswar Saikia passes away

Laksheswar Saikia, former headmaster of Jhanji Girls High School and a resident of Jamuguri Balamia village in Sivasagar district, passed away suddenly on Saturday evening at the age of 91 due to heart failure.

GAURISAGAR: Laksheswar Saikia, former headmaster of Jhanji Girls High School and a resident of Jamuguri Balamia village in Sivasagar district, passed away suddenly on Saturday evening at the age of 91 due to heart failure. Born in 1932 at Jhanji Tamulichiga, Saikia did his schooling at Tamulichiga High School. He obtained a BA from JB College, Jorhat.

In 1960, he joined as an assistant teacher at Jhanji Girls High School. He took charge as headmaster in 1977 and got superannuation in 1997. He was actively associated with Axom Xahitya Xabha and Jhanji Sakha and served as president and secretary for many terms. For his contributions towards development in the field of education and literature, Jhanji Hem Nath Sarmah College, Jhanji Sakha Xahitya Xabha, Jhanji Lekhika Santha, Alankrita Mahila Samaj, and Jhanji Sakha Kavi Sanmilan, Jhanji Jamuguri Chandradhar Gogoi (CG), Sankardev Sishu Niketan felicitated him. His sudden demise was widely mourned in the entire Jhanji area. This morning, his last rites were performed. Before his cremation, a shraddhanjali function was held at his residence. Senior journalist Rajib Dutta anchored the function where Jhanji Girls High School,Jhanji HNS College,Jhanji Press Club,CG Sankardev Sishu Niketan,Jhanji, DC Gogoi Jakaichuk HS School,Charing, Hatighuli GP, All Assam HS Teachers and Employees Association, Assam College Teachers Association, Pub Jorhat Education Block, among others, paid floral tribute to him. He is survived by his wife and retired teacher Kanaklata Saikia,two sons, one daughter, and a host of relatives.
