GOALPARA: Afjalur Rahman, former minister and six time MLA from the 39, Jaleswar constituency of Goalpara district, died on Thursday at the age of 78 in his own residence at Jaleswar.

Rahman was popular during his time and was chosen as the Panchayat and Rural Development Minister in the Hiteswar Saikia-led Congress ministry. Born in 1944, he was first elected as an MLA in the year 1978 and in 1991 he became minister.

Besides politics, the vocal leader had initiated several educational institutions in his remote constituency, including the Tapobon College. His death was condoled by all the leading political party district committees, including the Goalpara district Congress.
