Guwahati: Former Congress leader and Mariani's ex MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi surprised his well-wishers by posting photos of himself dressed as a sage on social media.

Kurmi explained that he participated in a 'Bhaona', which is a traditional form of entertainment that delivers a religious message. The 'Bhaona' was organized by Magic-A'pe Committee at Deberapar Chariali in Mariani, Assam.

It is also to be mentioned that Rupjyoti Kurmi is a four-time MLA from the Mariani constituency and is very popular among the people living there.

Kurmi played the role of sage Gargamuni in the 'Bhaona' that was called 'Dasyu Ratnakar Muktilaabh'.

As popular as he is, Kurmi managed to attract a large crowd with his performance. People were particularly excited to see their local hero perform in the 'Bhaona'.

Rupjyoti Kurmi has also taken part in several such 'Bhaonas' in the past and this is not the first time for the audience to watch him perform.

Belonging from the tea-tribe community, Kurmi had resigned from Congress and gave up his MLA seat to join BJP in June.

He was later suspended by Congress from its primary membership for indulging in 'anti-party activities.'

He is the son of former Congress leader Rupam Kurmi who had also won the MLA seat three times.

Even after his resignation, Rupjyoti Kurmi still remains a popular and influential figure in the constituency.
