KOKRAJHAR: Former Rajya Sabha MP Urkhao Gwra Brahma on Saturday said that many people, including political parties, had confusion whether the BTC election would be held within October due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. He said there was no common opinion of cabinet ministers with regard to the BTC election. He demanded that the State Election Commission and State Government should clarify their stand to remove confusion among people and unnecessary political campaign.

Brahma said few days back, DCs were rebuked by a minister for allowing big election rallies in BTC area saying that holding of BTC election was quite uncertain. After a few days, the Governor of Assam also repeated same words that due to the pandemic situation, holding of council election was uncertain and again on Friday, another minister from BTC area said that the council election would be held on the dates between October 15 to October 20, adding that according to him, the State Government and the State Election Commission had discussed the matter already. However, the minister was not an official spokesperson of the government. This was supposed to be announced by the Election Commission or the official spokesman of the government.

Brahma said the six months period of Governor's Rule would come to an end on October 27 and if not extended, the new council had to be elected before that. He said that Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal was on a three-day visit to New Delhi where other party leaders would also be joining for having discussion on various issues with the Prime Minister and the Home Minister. He said that the report on Clause 6 of Assam Accord and HPCL Paper Mill were core issues and the BTC election might also get a place in the discussion.

Former MP and founder president of UPPL, Brahma said that the political parties and the people were getting restless as many activities related to development were on halt due to the prevailing Model Code of Conduct. He said that people now wanted clarity of decision regarding the council election.
