KOKRAJHAR: A former rebel of the National Liberation Front of Bodoland (NLFB), who is believed to have been involved in the recent looting cases in Chirang district, was shot dead by police in Ultapani jungle in Kokrajhar district on Friday morning.

Additional Superintendent of Police of Kokrajhar, S. Singh Panesar said that based on intelligence input, Kokrajhar police apprehended Sanjula Warry alias W. Santhab (26) of village Kashiabari Dulagaon under Gossaigaon PS on March 31, who was earlier a member of NLFB. He had stayed at the Udalguri camp and had made a gang of around 10-15 members and was involved in the robbery and firing incident at Bithani village under Amteka PS in Chirang district, along with his gang members.

As per information received from spot interrogation, an operation was launched to retrieve the looted money and gold ornaments under the command of OC, Kokrajhar at about 12.30 AM on April 1 at Ultapani reserve forest on being led by the accused. When the operation party reached the location near some abandoned quarters, Sanjula Warry led the party to the exact location where the looted money and gold ornaments were buried under a big tree and covered with some unused bricks. Suddenly, while he was supposed to bring out the looted money and gold ornaments under the tree, he also took out a loaded pistol which was also kept along with the looted materials, and he allegedly started firing upon the police team, said the Additional SP.

One bullet hit the bullet-proof jacket of the officer. The Additional SP said the accused started to run towards the jungle while firing at the police team. Sensing the immediate danger to life and government property, the police team was forced to retaliate. During the exchange of fire, the accused person was hit and he was immediately recaptured and taken to Kokrajhar RN Brahma Civil Hospital but he was declared brought dead by the on-duty doctor.

The police team seized Rs 1,00,000 cash, the looted gold ornaments and one 7.65 mm pistol along with magazine fitted with 4 rounds of live ammunition from his possession. The police team also seized four empty fired cases of 7.65 mm ammunition.
