LAKHIMPUR: Death of a total of four vultures of rare species in Dhakuakhana subdivision of Lakhimpur district has grieved nature lovers. The vultures are suspected to have died due to food poisoning. The carcasses of the vultures were recovered in the Lajoi Bil premises near the embankment of River Korha under Dhakuakhana Police Station on Sunday morning.
As per information found, a carcass of a cow, which died due to infection of an unknown disease, was dumped on the bank of the river a few days back. The vultures consumed the flesh of the cow carcass and then they were seen in a critical condition by the side of the Lajoi Bil in the morning hours on Saturday. But the onlookers paid no importance to the ill-fated vultures due to which they died in the afternoon.
Receiving the information about the death of the vultures from a source on Saturday, journalist Rajib Baruah informed it to the Dhakuakhana forest officials. Arriving at the spot at night, Forester Chandrakanta Das could not locate the dead vultures in the area due to darkness. However, on Sunday morning, the Forester recovered the carcasses of the vultures, which were identified to be of Himalayan Siphon species, an endangered species of vultures. The Forester shifted the vulture carcasses for post mortem.
Notably, this incident is the fifth incident about the death of vultures in Dhakuakhana within a short period due to food poisoning. Under such circumstances, Dhakuakhana Forest Office has called upon the people not to dump the carcass of cow or any other animals which die due to illness.
