KOKRAJHAR: Two BJP leaders, Dhan Bharali alias Rupam Deka of the Nalbari district BJP Youth Morcha, and Arnav Kalita, state secretary of BJP Study Cell, are in Kokrajhar police station at present. The BJP leaders were allegedly involved in fraud and arrested for tricking a well-established Delhi-based contractor while withdrawing a sum of Rs 7 crore from the P&RD department with fake order for the supply of mosquito nets.

A total of 20,000 mosquito nets were already brought to BTC by order from the contractor for the supply of 80,000 mosquito nets. Fraudster Rupam Deka had taken Rs 28 lakh as an advance in the name of supply from Ashwini Sharma, an established contractor in Delhi.

In recent times, the BTC government had entrusted NITCO with the task of scrutinizing the multi-crore work done by the previous council government, after which the whole thing came to light. After the contractor submitted the bill to the BTC secretariat, it came to light that the suppliers had used fake orders in the name of supplying mosquito nets worth about Rs 3 crore.

As a result, contractor Ashwini Sharma filed a complaint against the two accused in Kokrajhar. A case was registered at Kokrajhar Sadar Police Station in connection with the incident. Based on the complaint, a team of Kokrajhar police arrested the two persons from the Nalbari district on Tuesday. The two are currently being questioned by police for more information.

In the latest development on Wednesday, police have been able to seize 5,000 mosquito nets from Baria. Police sources have also informed that the rest of the accused involved in the scam were on the run.
