GOALPARA: At least two phases of the five-day free eye check-up and spectacle distribution camps for NH-17 truck drivers concluded in Goalpara district on Friday. The first phase of the programme was held at Agia, about 12 km from the Goalpara town from May 9 to 13. On the other hand, the second phase of the programme which began from May 16, concluded on Friday at Dudhnoi.

The programmes were sponsored by the road safety cell of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and were locally organized by the Swaraj Welfare Foundation, a prominent local NGO.

"During these two sessions of ten days, an expert health department team have treated 1010 truck drivers and urgently prescribed and handed over spectacles to 770 drivers and handymen," Abdul Mozid, secretary of the Swaraj Welfare Foundation said.

As the second phase aimed at the Assam-Meghalaya inter-state truck drivers, the first phase had targeted mainly the long distance truck drivers from Assam, West Bengal, UP and Bihar.

Earlier on May 9, the first phase programme was inaugurated by Meenakshi Das Nath, Deputy Commissioner of Goalpara district in presence of district transport authority, health department and other government officers besides prominent civilians. The second phase was inaugurated by VV Rakesh Reddy, Superintendent of Police of Goalpara district.
