LAKHIMPUR: Noted freedom fighter of Lakhimpur district, Bholanath Baruah is no more. He breathed his last due to old-age ailments on Tuesday around 11:40 am at his own residence located at Panigaon under the district. He was 97. The mortal remains of the freedom fighter were cremated with full State honour at his own land located at the native village on Wednesday morning by offering gun salute.

Born at Panigaon in 1925, Bholanath Baruah took part in the freedom movement following the path of non-violence advocated by Mahatma Gandhi. He joined in the Quit India Movement, leading the associate freedom fighters and volunteers of the district.

After the independence of the nation, the freedom fighter started his service life as a teacher at Chiring Chuk LP School under Angarkhowa area of the district. Later he served at Na-Ali Haladhiat LP School and retired from the same academic institution. In 2014, Bholanath Baruah was accorded warm felicitation as an eminent freedom fighter by the then president of India, Pranab Mukherjee. He was one of the chief advisers of the Lakhimpur district units of Koch Rajbonshi Sanmilani and All Koch Students' Union (AKRASU). He was the founder president of the Panigaon regional unit of the Koch Rajbonshi Sanmilani and president of the management committee of Panigaon Gargi LP School. He was actively involved with the Panigaon Namghar, noted socio-cultural institution Panigaon Pragati Sangha along with many other organizations and institutions of southern Lakhimpur. He is survived by three sons and three daughters.

His demise was condoled by Asom Rajyik Mukti Jujaru Sanmilan, Koch Rajbonshi Sanmilani AKRASU, Panigaon Pragati Sangha, Panigaon Namghar Management Committee along with many other institutions and individuals. Deputy Commissioner of Lakhimpur Sumit Sattawan, SP Bedanta Madhab Rajkhowa, Lakhimpur MLA Manav Deka attended his funeral and paid him homage.
