Frequent power cuts leave people harried in Biswanath Chariali

BISWANATH CHARIALI: Frequent power cuts have thrown the lives of people out of gear in and around Biswanath Chariali during these monsoon days.

The alleged lackadaisical attitude of the Biswanath subdivision of the Assam Power Distribution Company Ltd (APDCL) has been largely attributed for the current scenario. Under the APDCL office of Biswanath Elect rical Sub division covering from the Ghiladhari River in the west to the Buroi River inthe east, there are four control rooms at present, namely Biswanath Chariali, Pabhoi, Monabari and Borgang, while another control room is going to be commissioned at Bedeti within one month. APDCL has also proposed to commission two more control rooms, one each at Burhigang and Gingia. The Biswnath Electrical Subdivision of APDCL, which has approximately 72,000 consumers along with several major tea companies and many small tea gardens, generates good revenue but has largely failed in terms of quality and availability of power as there have been regular power cuts.

People are allegedly getting power supply for only 15-18 hours a day.

Frequent power cuts have become a normal thing these days and on occasions, power is unavailable for hours at a stretch. The students who are pursuing online classes due to the lockdown and the businessmen who deal in electrical and electronic goods are the worst sufferers.

Significantly, the office of the APDCL office of Biswanath Electrical Subdivision also lacks adequate manpower. The citizens have exhorted the department concerned to address the grievances of the consumers and appoint adequate number of staff. They also urged the government to ensure uninterrupted power supply.
