PATHSALA: A shocking video is doing the rounds on social media showing a few girls from the Northeast being harassed by a group of men in Delhi's Hauz Khas area.
The girls recorded a video of the incident, which then went viral on social media. The video clip shows a group of middle-aged men asking the girls their 'rate', assuming them to be sex workers. In the video, the girls can be seen confronting the men. After this, the men can be heard apologizing for their act.
Meanwhile, various student organizations from Gauhati University, Bhattadev University along with Northeast Students' Union, Vadodara demanded strict punishment for the men involved.
Gunjan Rajbongshi, a student of Bhattadev University said, "Since Independence, people of the north-eastern region have faced discrimination across the country. The people of the Northeast face racist slurs in other parts of the country. It is the government takes concrete measures to stop these kinds of incidents."
Debonil Baruah, advisor of Northeast Students' Union, Vadodara, said "I highly condemn this incident that happened in New Delhi with the girls from Northeast India. This not just one case, earlier also people from the Northeast had to face discrimination, racial slur and abusive comments only because of their facial features. At the same time, I would say that not just the Northeast, women belonging from any part of this world or our country do not deserve to be treated in that way. I request the authorities concerned to give punishment to the men involved. At the same time, I suggest that along with some strong action, awareness programmes should be undertaken."
