TANGLA: The traditional Deoul Utsav is held annually in most of the parts of the undivided Darrang district including the present Udalguri district in the month of Bohag. Under the pretext of such Utsav, the illegal gambling dens have flooded in Udalguri district particularly under Bhergaon subdivision area.

Under the Bhergaon subdivisional police jurisdiction alone, the areas which fall under Tangla Police Station, Panery Police Station, Khoirabari Police Station, Dimakuchi Police Station there are 6 to 10 such utsavs which lead to open gambling dens under the banner of such fairs. The people addicted to gambling are generally from the poorer sections of the community. As sources divulged, lakhs of rupees of gambling games are being organised on a daily basis. But, ironically, the police department and the civil administration have remained mute spectators to all these and have not taken any steps to nab the culprits or stop these illegal businesses which is gripping the young generation. The Udalguri chapter of All Koch Rajbongshi Student's Union (AKRSU) have submitted a memorandum in this regard to SDPO Bhergaon to immediately halt the gambling practice and saving the low income group villagers from the grip of gambling.

Meanwhile, the Kalaigaon regional unit of Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP ) has also exhorted the administration to evict the gambling dens which have been flourishing during the Deoul Utsav fair.

"Deoul Utsav is a traditional festival of Darrangi culture and religious sentiments of people should not be hurt by holding gambling in these occasion which also degrades the social fabric and pushes the young generation to hell," said senior journalist Bapan Sarma. Conscious circle have urged the district administration to stop holding such illegal gambling activities for the greater interest of the society.
