NAHARKATIA: A team from Naharkatia Police Station led by officer in-charge Bhaskar Saikia conducted raid in the house of Nandu Mahato of Bikas Nagar, Naharkatia on Thursday night and busted a gambling racket.

Five gamblers were arrested, namely Pushu Das (25) of Naharkatia; Boliram Kalwar (46) of Naharkatia; Lalit Dhar(23) of Naharkatia; Debu Das (39) of Joypur; and Debendra Majumdar (42) of Deomali (Arunachal Pradesh) from the gambling spot. The police team also seized Rs 5,500 cash, 7 sets of playing cards, one Hero Honda Glamour bike bearing registration no.AS-06-C-2928 and a Renault Duster vehicle bearing registration no.AS-01-BG-0045 from the betting spot.

Later, as per confessional statement of the accused persons, a raid was conducted in the house of Mahi Uddin Ahmed alias Bhaity of Joypur who managed to escape from the spot. He was allegedly the main financer of the gambling game. Police also recovered two motorcycles belonging to Md Rijwan and Md Aslam bearing registration numbers AS-06-W-7821 and AS-06-T-7111 from the premises of Bhaity Ahmed and they were seized accordingly. There were total 10 gamblers in the gambling place.

Police investigation is going on. The Naharkatia police have registered a case no. 157/2020 under section 294(A) IPC, R/W Section 13/14/15 of the Assam Game and Betting Act,1970 and the arrested persons were produced in the court on Friday.
