GUWAHATI: In a bizarre incident, a gaonbura (village head) was arrested in Chabua, Dibrugarh for allegedly stealing the undergarments of local women.
As per reports, Sailendra Bharali, a resident of the Dinjay village, was nabbed red-handed by villagers while stealing some undergarments of a woman on Tuesday. He was later handed over to the Chabua police. Court sent him to judicial custody.
"He stole my petticoats", a woman alleged.
However, he denied the allegations of stealing. Bharali is the local government appointed gaonburha.
Local people alleged that undergarments of girls and women were stolen by unknown person in the last few days. They suspected that some people might steal these to perform black magic against them.
Earlier, sensation prevailed in Chirang district following the murder of a 60-year-old woman identified as Bala Mardi. Local residents suspect that the murder is an outcome of some people suspecting that the woman was involved in black magic.
The macabre incident took place in Kumguri Village under Runikhata Police Station of Chirang district. The sexagenarian woman was stabbed to death using sharp weapons.
Talking to the media, the Additional Superintendent of Police of Chirang said that the police recieved message about the incident at about 9:30 am on Sunday. "Our team rushed to the spot . This interior village is located along the Indo-Bhutan border. We have recovered the body from her house. It has been sent for postmortem. We are investigating the matter," added the Police official.
