Gargaon College celebrates World Intellectual Property Day

SIVASAGAR: To mark the occasion of World Intellectual Property Day, a webinar was organized by Department of Statistics and Department of Chemistry, in collaboration with IQAC, Gargaon College on Wednesday, with the theme ‘Innovation, Creativity, Intellectual Property’, presented by eminent Intellectual Property professional and expert Siddhartha Devnath from Patent Design Trademark and Copyright Services, Guwahati.

The webinar was inaugurated by renowned academician Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta, Principal, Gargaon College. In his inaugural speech, Dr Mahanta emphasized the relevance of intellectual property rights of the creators and innovators and its impact on safeguarding the creations and to encourage the creation of intellectual goods. He also welcomed all the attendees and appreciated the endeavour of the Departments of Statistics and Chemistry, Gargaon college to mark the occasion.

The Head of the Department of Statistics and one of the convenors of the programme, Dr Ranjana Gogoi, introduced the national-level resource person to the audience and elaborated on S Devnath’s expertise and experience in the field of IPR for patent, copyright, trademark, design and geographical indications and his contribution in raising awareness on the topic across the country.

The speaker Siddhartha Devnath initiated the deliberation with the importance of the day and then addressed numerous aspects of IP. He particularly focussed on how a simple invention can bring about a change in society and thus be classified as innovation. He emphasized how imagination builds creativity with various examples such as the ‘Fisher Space Pen’, a pen designed to write in absence of gravity (unlike ball point pen). He also explained the innovations of several women innovators of Assam, in keeping with the theme of World IP Day 2023 ‘Women and IP: Accelerating Innovation and Creativity’.

The session was followed by several interesting discussion and follow-up queries of the participants. The programme was coordinated by Dr Ranjana Gogoi, Head, Department of Statistics, and Dr Anna Gogoi, Head, Department of Chemistry.
