Gargaon College conducts Volunteer Teaching Programme

SIVASAGAR: With an aim to render support to schools and underprivileged students in the sphere of education and make education more inclusive, the IQAC of Gargaon College has undertaken a project titled ‘Gyanjatra’.

As part of this project, the Department of Statistics Gargaon College organized a Volunteer Teaching Programme on June 30. Under this mission, several students of the Department of Statistics visited government primary and ME Schools in their native villages. Swarnimraj Baruah, a student of B.Sc 5th Sem(Hons) visited Lakhimi Pathar ME School and imparted lessons on arithmetic to 6th and 7th standard students on topics such as concept of number lines, natural numbers, whole numbers, integers, positive and negative numbers etc.

Prakash Gogoi visited Rupahibam MV School where he taught the concept of tense and their types to the 6th and 7th standard students. Mondeep Gogoi visited Dimoruguri Gaon LP School and he discussed the topic of basic introduction to numbers, types of numbers, ideas about multiplication, addition and conversion of rupees and paise to 3rd and 4th grade students. Soniya Thapa visited Amar Jyoti LP School and taught arithmetic fractions to the 5th grade students. The programme was coordinated by Dr Bornali Dutta, Assistant Professor of the Department of Statistics, Gargaon College.

The department of Mathematics of Gargaon College, in collaboration with IQAC of the college under Gyanjatra project, too conducted a Volunteer Teaching Programme at Ligiri Pukhuri High School, Nazira from June 25 to June 30 where students from 5th and 3rd semester taught Mathematics from Class VI to Class X students and interacted with the students. The purpose of the programme was to promote community engagement and social responsibility among the students as well as to popularize Mathematics and create awareness on Mathematical Olympiad among the school students.

The students of the Mathematics department under the guidance of Dr Kabita Phukon, Head of the department, Harekrishna Mili and Sujata Goala, Assistant Professors paid a visit to Ligiri Pukhuri High School with the objectives of teaching and serving the community. Pranjit Gogoi, Bishnu Saikia, Raja Ghatuwar, Lemi Phome, Raj Konwar, Biswa Buragohain and Irfhan Rohman imparted lessons in standards VIII, IX and IX. Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta, Principal of Gargaon College, lauded the efforts of the faculty members and students of Mathematics Department and that of the Statistics Department for conducting the Volunteer Teaching Programme and expressed hope that such programmes will facilitate the exchange of knowledge and ideas and development of skills in students.

Dr Kabita Phukon explained the objectives of undertaking the volunteer teaching programme and spoke about the various activities that the Mathematics Department of Gargaon College has been conducting in collaboration with the schools.
