DOOMDOOMA/TINSUKIA: Panic gripped the entire Baghjan area after gas started emitting from Oil India Limited's well number 5 following a massive explosion under Baghjan Oil Fields (EPS) in Tinsukia district on Wednesday morning.

The gas gushing out from the well with thundering sound left a vast area covered with grey smog. The Tinsukia district administration as well as Oil India Limited evacuated 35 families and arranged temporary shelter and rehabilitation for them. Both the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police of Tinsukia have been camping at the site.

Tridib Hazarika, senior PRO of OIL, told this correspondent that due to some change in technicalities the incident occurred. Allaying the fear of explosion or any other major disaster, Hazarika said that as the gas was being propelling outside vertically to the atmosphere, there would not be much damage unlike spilling even if fire was caught. The emission of gas has been contained and slowed down, claimed Hazarika.
