GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court directed the Government of Assam to make arrangements for potable water supplies for all the people who have been shifted to shelter homes due to the evictions carried out across the state for various reasons. The court also ordered the state government to make this arrangement immediately.

The Gauhati High Court also asked the state government to provide the exact number of shelter camps located across the state, wherein the people who were displaced by various eviction drives were houses. This report must also include the demographics including gender-wise distribution as well as the number of children who have been accommodated in these camps.

The Court has also ordered the state government to submit an affidavit with all the necessary details to be submitted within ten days. Justice Mridul Kumar Kalita stated pursuant to being requested to act as Amicus Curiae in this matter, senior Advocate BD Konwar visited and inspected the site of the temporary shelter at Changmaji Gaon. This location comes under the Jamunamukh Mouza of the Doboka sub-division of the district of Hojai in Assam.

The senior advocate submitted a detailed inspection prepared by him after the visit. And this report mentioned the lack of proper drinking water facilities in the camp which triggered an immediate remedial measure towards the same. So the state government has been ordered to set up a properly filtered water supply in the camp.

In another case, Justice Suman Shyam has permitted the APSC (Assam Public Service Commission) to declare the final result of the selection process of MVIs (Motor Vehicle Inspectors) under the Commissionerate of Transport, Assam, but no order of appointment based on the final select list shall be issued till the next date of hearing. The bench will hear the IA (interlocutory application) on April 26, 2023.
