GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court today denied bail to former Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), P K Dutta in the SI exam scam case that rocked the state last year.

Dutta was arrested by the Special Branch of Darjeeling district from the Assam-Nepal border on October 6, 2020.

The bail plea, which has been rejected, was challenged by advocate Dhanesh Das on behalf of the government.

Earlier, Akshay Chand Baid, one of the prime accused in the Sub-Inspector (SI) recruitment exam paper leak scam of Assam Police has been granted bail by the Gauhati High Court (GHC) on January 18 on health grounds.

Along with him eight accused have also been granted bail, sources said, however, the names of the people are yet to be revealed.

Akshay Chand Baid aka Akhiya is the owner of Akshay Telecommunication, the company which got a sub-contract for conducting the Police SI Recruitment Exam. He was in judicial custody since October 27, 2020.

As per reports, Baid has been granted bail from the Gauhati High Court due to complaints on health-related issues. Furthermore, Baid is currently undergoing medical treatment in Chennai.

It is to be mentioned that earlier, the then State Level Police Recruitment Board (SLPRB) chairperson Pradeep Kumar tendered his resignation taking moral responsibility for the failure to conduct the examination in a free and fair manner and Assam DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta was then appointed as the new chairperson of the SLPRB.

It is to be mentioned here that on September 20, 2020, some 66,000 candidates were answering the questions when the exam was canceled after the leaked question paper went viral on social media.
