KOKRAJHAR: The working president of the Bodoland Janajati Suraksha Mancha (BJSM), DD Narzary, who was brought to RN Brahma Civil Hospital, Kokrajhar from the district jail for medical treatment on Tuesday, hailed the recent judgement of Gauhati High Court to stop issuing ST certificates to Saranias of Assam. He said the judgement had given due protection to the existing tribal people of Assam.

Narzary has been in Kokrajhar jail since the first week of December last year as police arrested him on charges of being vocal with a group that tried to float a new militant outfit on January 26. He was brought to the civil hospital for treatment on Tuesday. He had developed heart problem and gall bladder stone, his elder sister Malati Rani Narzary told this correspondent.

Narzary said the Saranias were issued ST certificates based on administrative decision of the State after discussion with the All Assam Tribal Sangha (AATS) and Sarania Kachari Students’ Union in 2014. The BJSM lodged PIL in Gauhati High Court challenging the issuing of ST certificate to them by violating the legal status of Commission for Scheduled Tribes, he said, adding that the Government of Assam had no power to take the decision to issue ST certificate by discussing with the AATS and the student body. He appreciated the judgement of the Gauhati High Court.
