GUWAHATI: Following the announcement of three more leaders from the Congress party on Sunday, Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi urged party workers to canvass in favour of Bhaskar Jyoti Baruah who will be contesting from the Titabar constituency.
The other two leaders whose names were announced were Bharat Narah from Naoboicha, and Padam Lochan Doley from Dhakuakhana.
While expressing his relationship with the people of Titabar, MP Gogoi said that it is beyond politics, Gogoi took to Twitter and urged party workers to campaign in favour of Baruah and ensure the victory of the party in the elections.
"My relationship with the people of Titabor is beyond politics. Titabar is my home and I will forever remain her son. I request all the Congress party workers to canvass in favour of Bhaskar Jyoti Baruah and ensure the victory of Indian National Congress party in the elections," Gogoi tweeted.
The Titabar constituency holds significance as it was represented by former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi for three terms. However, after Gogoi passed away last year, the BJP is aiming to book its seat in the constituency.
The BJP on the other hand has named Hemanta Kalita (former AGP MLA from Titabar) as its candidate for the Titabor constituency.
With the absence of a Chief Ministerial candidate and Tarun Gogoi, the saffron party is aiming to grab the seat in the constituency. However, Congress is hopeful that the party will be able to regain its hold in the Titabar constituency.
Earlier on Saturday, the party released its first list of 40 candidates.
Meanwhile, the Leader of Opposition, Debabrata Saikia will contest from Nazira, Rakibul Hussain will contest from Samuguri, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee APCC President Ripun Bora will fight for Gohpur seat and Angkita Dutta, daughter of former Assan Congress President Anjan Dutta, has won party ticket from Amguri.
The assembly polls in the state will be held in 3 phases beginning March 27. The counting of votes will take place on May 2.
