GUWAHATI: At a time when the Bhartiya Janata Party BJP leaders have been slamming the Congress for joining hands with Badaruddin Ajmal led All India United Democratic Front AIUDF for the upcoming elections, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi justifying the alliance asserted that it is an attempt to unite with anti-CAA (Citizenship (Amendment) Act) forces in order to protect the ethos of the Assam Accord.
Gogoi also said that the socio-political scenario of Assam has changed after the CAA. Speaking about his father-Tarun Gogoi, he said that even he was against the alliance with AIUDF, but later he resorted to unite with Ajmal in the post-CAA scenario.
The heavyweights from BJP including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP National President JP Nadda and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and every other BJP leader, have been slamming the tie-up between Congress and AIUDF. They also highlighted in their speech that Tarun Gogoi opposed any alliance with the AIUDF.
The senior Congress leader opined that the situation in Assam can now be divided into two phases -- pre-CAA and post-CAA, and it was necessary to unite all anti-CAA forces in order to protect the ethos of the Assam Accord.
As per reports, he further said there is a pre-CAA Assam, where Congress and AIUDF were on opposite ends, but in the post-CAA Assam, Congress, AIUDF and the Left parties have opposed the Act.
Commenting on the regional parties born out of the anti-CAA movement- Akhil Gogoi led Raijor Dal and the All Assam Students Union AASU backed Assam Jatiya Parishad AJP, Gogoi extended his goodwill to both the parties as they are opposing the CAA.
The Congress has formed a Grand Alliance with AIUDF, BPF, CPI, CPI(M), CPI(ML), Anchalik Gana Morcha (AGM), RJD and Jimochayan (Deori) Peoples Party (JPP) to fight the upcoming Assembly election against the BJP-led NDA.
Gogoi further asserted that the BJP is downplaying the anti-CAA sentiments in the state with their leaders terming it as a non-factor.
Congress has recently released its manifesto, one of the key aspects of which is to introduce a law to nullify the CAA.
