Gene Bank started at Tyagbir Hem Baruah College in Jamugurihat

JAMUGURIHAT: Assam is rich in plant diversity which is an important source of livelihood for rural people. But in the recent past, due to population exploitation or due to changes in environmental conditions, most of these valuable plants are on the verge of extinction. If proper steps for their conservation are not taken, these indispensable resources will become extinct in near future.

With this noble concept, the Government of Assam, under the aegis of Assam Science Technology and Environment Council (ASTEC), has started providing financial assistance to some selected educational institutions of Assam to foster Gene Bank system. The Department of Botany of Tyagbir Hem Baruah College, Jamugurihat, started the proposed Gene Bank as per the advisory of the ASTEC.

The Gene Bank of the college covers a total of 30,000 square feet area which is fully fenced. Many rare plants of the locality have been collected and replanted in the gene bank. Some of these plants include Kuji Thekera, Kendu, Polash and Barun. Other selected plants will also be planted in the gene bank, Dr Ajit Hazarika, Principal of the college, and Dr. Tulshi Upadhyay, project coordinator and Head of the Department of Botany of THB College, told media persons.
