LAKHIMPUR: A tense situation prevailed at Panigaon Additional Hospital in Lakhimpur district on Monday following the death of a minor girl few minutes after she was posted an injection.
The girl was identified as Nirmali Saikia, daughter of Ramen Saikia, resident of Phulani in Majuli district. As per report, she came to visit her relatives living at Egharomile under Panigaon Police Station some days ago. On Monday, she was brought to the Panigaon Additional Hospital in order to get an injection. A nurse on duty in the hospital injected her the injection, named Benzathine Penicilline which was prescribed by a physician of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in May for improving her health problem. It is alleged that the girl died after some minutes. At this, her attendants and the local people created a hue and cry, alleging the girl’s death due to wrong treatment. Police from Panigaon Police Station and an executive magistrate arrived at the hospital before the situation went out of control. Later, the body was sent for post-mortem at North Lakhimpur Civil Hospital.
Regarding the issue, the Joint Director of Lakhimpur District Health Services, Dr Harpal Sing Suri, told this correspondent that the girl was a heart patient who had been undergoing treatment in GMCH from May 10 to May 28. When discharged, she was prescribed the mentioned injection to be taken after every three weeks. “As the complaint of wrong treatment was made, the body was sent for post-mortem in order to ascertain the cause of her death,” he added.
