Numaligarh: Kaziranga National Park Employees’ Union organized Global Tiger Day in Kohora on Monday. The meritorious children of the employees of the national park were also felicitated in the programme which was held at the Centenary Centre of KNP at Kohora.
A total of 14 meritorious students who performed well in the HS and HSLC exams were felicitated by the Kaziranga National Park Employees’ Welfare Committee with cash and citation letters. Research officer of KNP, Robin Sharma and Honorary Wildlife Warden of Golaghat, Uttam Saikia spoke about the significance of tiger conservation and tiger census related issues. The team members engaged in the tiger census at KNP were also felicitated in the programme.
A German Shepherd sniffer dog and her handlers were also felicitated by the KNP authorities for helping in solving a number of wildlife crime cases. The sniffer dog, named Qualmy, is employed under Biswanath wildlife division.
The programme was attended by the Director of Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve, P Shivakumar, DFO East Assam Wildlife Division, Rohini Ballav Saikia, DFO Biswanath Wildlife Division, Mukut Das and other dignitaries.
According to WWF, around 3,900 wild tigers are left in the world as of today, with 70 per cent of the tiger population found in India.
