GMCH Employee Suspended For Trying To Sell Expired Medicines

GUWAHATI: In the most recent instance of fraud to be reported from the grounds of Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH), a regular employee of the Cardiothoracic and Neuroscience Center was caught in the act by the caretaker of an ICU patient on Friday morning while attempting to coercively sell him expired medications.

The con artist, Dipu Das, a resident of Boripara in Guwahati's Maligaon area, attempted to sell 1,000 rupees' worth of medications from the trunk of his car.

According to the information obtained, the GMCH administration quickly suspended the imposter from his position as a result of a written complaint from the victim. Along with that, an FIR has been launched in the Bhangagarh police station.

Abhijit Sarma, the superintendent of the GMCH, stated in a statement to the media, "The accused was detected engaging in the malpractice, and as a result, he was suspended with immediate effect."

A committee for the process of inquiry has also been established to investigate the situation. The committee will have 48 hours to produce the report, he added.

The accused had previously been moved to the CN Center, GMCH, from Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital (MMCH).

Abhijit Sarma continued, "The accused has admitted that he kept the medications in his car that he claimed to have obtained from the belongings of ICU death patients."

It should be mentioned that at the GMCH, where thousands of patients are admitted every day for a range of medical conditions, such malpractices by some regular and contractual personnel have become all too common.

On the other hand, a number of prominent medical professionals at the GMCH have also been questioned regarding these suspected malpractices at the Emergency Operation Theatre (OT).

The incident came to light after a patient's carer complained earlier to Superintendent Abhijit Sarma about a bunch of scammers at GMCH who defrauded in the name of buying surgical and medical equipment worth Rs 35,000.

Abhijit Sarma, the superintendent of the GMCH, has addressed the media in response to similar malpractices, saying, "The incidence of the malpractice at the emergency room of the GMCH has come to our attention after a complaint was lodged by a patient's attendant."
