Assam: 50 People Ill From Possible Food Poisoning in Goalpara

GOALPARA: In Mariampur of Assam's Goalpara district, some 50 individuals, including adults and children, are believed to have contracted illness from possible food poisoning on Wednesday.

The victims apparently consumed fish during a feast, which led to their development of food poisoning symptoms. A total of thirty patients have been admitted to the Bikali Model Hospital, while twenty more are receiving care at Rangjuli Hospital. Many people who were in critical condition were transported to Goalpara.

“At least 40 people fell ill after allegedly consuming food at a post-death ritual programme held at Mariumpur area in Goalpara district on Wednesday,” said the police.

“When some people who attended the post-death ritual programme started vomiting after consuming the food, they were immediately admitted at Rangjuli Primary Health Centre on Wednesday night,” the police added.

Sources claim that the poisoning may have been caused by the fish served during the feast. Two of the victims are reportedly in critical condition.

“The family members of the victims told us that they ate fish along with other food in the post-death ritual programme. The actual cause is yet to be ascertained, however, it seems to be a food poisoning case. So far, 20-25 people have been admitted to the hospital and many other sick people are coming. They are now undergoing treatment,” the Rangjuli Primary Health Centre doctor said.

On March 31, one of the pupils in Assam's Howraghat who had been unwell from what was thought to be food poisoning unfortunately died while receiving treatment.

The event happened on Tuesday in Howraghat town in the Karbi Anglong district of Assam. Twelve persons, including pupils and teaching and non-teaching faculty of a school, were unwell after eating noodles for lunch.

Tanmay Bora Rongpi was the name of the deceased pupil. He was one of the three individuals who had to be moved to Nagaon for better care when he developed a critical illness.

It should be remembered that earlier on Tuesday, a food poisoning outbreak led to the hospitalisation of at least 12 students at Howraghat Shankardev Vidya Niketan, a school in Howraghat, Assam.

According to preliminary reports, five pupils and seven members of the school's teaching and non-teaching faculty had to be admitted to the hospital after experiencing suspected food poisoning.
