Goalpara: In an interesting development here in Goalpara town, a veterinary officer held responsible the Assam Power Distribution Corporation Limited (APDCL) for his electrocuted pet dog and demanded compensation from the corporation.

According to the information, a pet dog of Dr. Naba Kamal Das, manager of district poultry farm, Goalpara, died on Monday following an accident of electrocution by a live wire lying on the ground inside his farm.

Dr. Das, shocked at the loss of his caring pet ‘Biki”, wrote a letter to the Deputy Manager (DM) of Goalpara APDCL holding the corporation responsible for the faulty electric line arrangement over the government poultry farm which fell on the ground leading to the death of his family friend ‘Biki’.

The owner demanded immediate compensation of twelve thousand rupees and replacement of the wire from aluminium to the modern cable for further safety.

Dr. Das said, “I want the compensation because it was not an ordinary dog, I trained it especially for the guarding purpose of the farm. Further, this is a public place frequented all the time by people, so a three-phase line carrying heavy electricity at the approach of the farm is fatal and may cause damage at any moment. So, replacement is necessary.”

Meanwhile, Sanjib Das, deputy manager of APDCL at Goalpara Town, confirmed the receiving of the letter. “We have received the letter along with the postmortem report of the dog and we are going to forward it to the higher authority for necessary action. However, it was an accident as the live wire fell due to the impact of the cyclonic storm in the district.” The APDCL has a provision of providing ex-gratia to the victims of electrocution whether man or animal.
