GOLAGHAT: The activists of Assam Tea Tribe Students' Association (ATTSA) Golaghat district unit staged a massive protest near the office of the Deputy Commissioner on Monday demanding ST status for the tea tribe community.

More than 300 activists of the organization gathered in front of the DC's office and shouted various slogans against the government. The president and secretary of ATTSA Golaghat unit, Babul Turi and Sushil Kalindi said that ST status for the tea tribe community was a long-pending demand of the organization. Every government had betrayed the community in fulfilling their demands. "Recently the BJP government decided to provide ST status only to 36 sub-castes out of 108 sub-castes of the tea tribe community. The BJP government tried to bring division among the people of the tea tribe community," they said. The ATTSA submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister demanding immediate ST status to the tea tribe community.
