GOLAGHAT: The activists of Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) Golaghat district unit staged a 10-hour sit-in near the Deputy Commissioner’s office on Monday, protesting against the Centre’s move for the privatization of BPCL of NRL. The organization strongly opposed the Central Government’s decision and demanded immediate withdrawal of the move to privatize BCPL.

AJYCP central committee general secretary Polash Changmai said that AJYCP would never support the handing over of Assam’s oil fields to private companies. “We strongly oppose the decision of the Narendra Modi-led BJP government to privatize BPCL. Further, he said that Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) had been serving crucial macroeconomic objectives such as higher economic growth, self-sufficiency in production of goods and services, infrastructure development and healthy market condition.

“Moreover, the CPSEs are also playing a significant role in discharging corporate social responsibility (CSR), especially in the field of health, education and skill development. The IOCL, BPCL, HPCL and NRL are remitting huge money to the national exchequer in the name of different taxes and dividend every year since inception, which ultimately helps in nation building and improving national economy. The Numaligarh Refinery Limited, which is a subsidiary of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, holding 61.65 per cent of share of NRL, will automatically go to private companies after disinvestment of BPCL. The Numaligarh Refinery Limited was set up as per outcome of the historic Assam Accord of 1985 which was signed after six long years of Assam Agitation where 855 martyrs laid down their lives. Therefore, no one can deny the fact that Numaligarh Refinery symbolizes the sentiments and emotions of every individual of Assam and the north-eastern region,” he said. Further, Changmai slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi as well as Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and said that despite disinvestment of NRL, the Sarbananda Sonowal government should appeal to the oil sector of north-eastern States to buy its share so that the future of NRL remained secure.
