Dibrugarh: Many tea community organizations, at a recent event held under the aegis of Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha (ACMS), accused the government of trying to create division among the Adivasi community and expressed their disappointment over the same.

President of ACMS, Pawan Singh Ghatowar, said that the latest government decision of granting ST status to the Adivasi community, along with five other indigenous communities of Assam, was incomprehensive and unfair. He informed that while there were a total of 109 groups within the Adivasi community, the ST status was being offered to only 36, thus setting the stage for division within the Adivasi community.

As a mark of disappointment and opposition to the move, it was decided that a protest would be staged on January 23, followed by sending of memoranda to the appropriate authority. The members, at the meeting, also slammed the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, and considered staging protests against the bill at a future date.
