LAKHIMPUR: Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Saturday said that the Chutiya community was known for its hard working and virtuous nature. The community played an important role in building the greater Assamese society and the Assam Government had been working unrelentingly to ensure all-round development of the community. The Chief Minister said this while attending the open session of the sixth biennial conference of All Assam Chutiya Students' Union held at Boginadi in Lakhimpur district on Saturday, stated a press release.

Underlining the Chutiya community's rich history, Chief Minister Sonowal said that the State Government took sincere steps for preserving its culture and heritage and urged the students' union to prepare a vision plan for holistic development of the community. He also appreciated the role played by the students' body for taking forward the community and urged the organization to play a meaningful role in developing better work culture in the State.

Stating that the Assam Government had been working for overall improvement of the Chutiya community, Chief Minister Sonowal informed that steps had been taken for setting up a university in the name of legendary woman personality of the community Sati Sadhani, besides declaring government holiday on April 21, which is observed as Sati Sadhani Day.

Recalling the contributions of several leading personalities of the Chutiya community such as Bhramar Chandra Saikia, Bhabakanta Chutiya, Kukheshwar Baruah and vaishnavite scholar Sonaram Chutiya, Chief Minister Sonowal called upon the students' union to draw inspiration from these figures and put efforts for development of the community and fostering goodwill, unity and harmony in the society.

Moreover, saying that agriculture played an important role in the State's economy, Chief Minister Sonowal said that due to sincere efforts of the Central and State governments, there had been a rapid change in the agriculture sector of the State in recent times. The Chief Minister mentioned about schemes such as soil health card, PM Fasal Bima Yojana, Krishi Sinchai Yojana, PM Kisan Samman Nidhi, Kisan Credit Card, CM Samagra Gramya Unnayan Yojana, and Krishi Sa-Sajuli Yojana which are being implemented to improve farm sector in the State.

Agriculture Minister Atul Bora, Minister of State (i/c) for Cultural Affairs Naba Kumar Doley, newly-elected president of the students' union, Mohen Bora and president of the reception committee, Munin Saikia also delivered speech in the open session which was presided over by outgoing president of the students' union, Khirod Saikia.

Lakhimpur MP Pradan Baruah, MLAs Utpal Dutta and Dr. Ranoj Pegu, CEM of Mising Autonomous Council, Paramananda Chayengiya and several others were present in the open session.
