BAKSA: Protests have begun in Tamulpur in the district of Baksa demanding immediate polls in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) area. On Wednesday, protest was staged at Barnagar of Tamulput on the Rangia-Tamulpur-Bhutan road by the OboroSurakshaSamiti — an organization comprising non-Bodo people from the BTAD of Assam. Kokrajhar MP Naba Kumar Sarania-led GanaSuraksha Party (GSP) was also a part of the protests held on Wednesday evening.

All these organizations raised slogans and demanded an end to the Governor's Rule in the BTC that had been necessitated due to deferment of the polls in the area due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic situation. The protesters said that they would not accept the transformation of the BTAD into BTR at any cost and condemned the SarbanandaSonowal-led BJP government in Assam.

Some of the prominent leaders of the non-Bodos such as BhaskarKalita of the OboroSurakshaSamiti, were present during the protest. Several leaders of the GanaSuraksha Party were also present.

The State cabinet had on October 7 decided to request the State Election Commission to hold the postponed BTC election in December, 2020. The elections are expected to be held sometime in mid-December.
