Guided trail organized inside Panidihing Bird Sanctuary for Birding and Botanizing

The office of the Divisional Forest Officer (Territorial), Sivasagar division on Tuesday successfully organized a guided trail to Kandulijan Beel and Phulai Beel for birding and botanizing inside Panidihing Bird Sanctuary.

DEMOW: The office of the Divisional Forest Officer (Territorial), Sivasagar division on Tuesday successfully organized a guided trail to Kandulijan Beel and Phulai Beel for birding and botanizing inside Panidihing Bird Sanctuary.

The objective of the event was to instill curiosity and scientific spirit amongst the students towards importance of wetland and grassland ecosystem. Around 73 students in two groups covered 1.5 km trail to the respective Beel destination. Four prominent colleges and three high schools actively participated.

Mridupaban Phukan, Debarshi Gogoi, Mayur Bawri, Madhab Gogoi for Birding and Dr.Utpal Kumar Dutta and Dr Prabhat Nath of Sivasagar College, Joysagar for botanizing were the resource persons. The birding and botanizing event within a span of two hours led to recording of 65 species of birds and 55 species of flora. The initiative of the Sivasagar Division (Territorial) in field exposure to Panidihing Bird Sanctuary was appreciated by the locals. The team is optimistic that such events will promote tourist inflow to Panidihing Bird Sanctuary, especially birders from all corners.

Dr Diptimanta Baruah, an experienced bird watcher who has worked tremendously for documentation of birds in Panidihing landscape, enlightened the students about the importance of wetland ecosystem and talked about the potential of Panidihing Bird Sanctuary becoming an eco-tourism hub. "Notably this area of visit has so far been untouched by guided tourism. The bird sanctuary has immense potential to attract international as well as national, State and local birders," stated Jayashree Naiding, Divisional Forest Officer, Sivasagar Division (Territorial).
