GUWAHATI: The Kamrup (Metropolitan) district administration took action on Friday by unveiling a dedicated helpline number in response to the artificial flooding crisis plaguing Guwahati city.
Relentless heavy rainfall over the past 48 hours has overwhelmed the city's drainage infrastructure, leading to extensive waterlogging in various areas.
Citizens facing the brunt of this situation can now contact the control room through the helpline number 9365429314. This helpline aims to facilitate residents in registering complaints, seeking guidance, and obtaining assistance during this challenging period.
Guwahati, often dubbed a "smart city," currently grapples with a grim situation as floodwaters have confined numerous households to their homes for more than 24 hours. Key areas like Ulubari, Rajgarh, Anil Nagar, Nabin Nagar, Gandhi Basti, Hatigaon, Zoo Road, Borbari, and RG Baruah Road are witnessing unprecedented water levels, significantly disrupting normal life in the city.
Meanwhile, the regional meteorological center has forecasted a "generally cloudy sky with one or two spells of rain or thundershowers" for today, potentially exacerbating the existing challenges faced by the residents of Guwahati.
Rain may bring relief from the heat but for the people of Guwahati, rains are a source of horror as it leads to flooding in several parts of the city. As the people of several parts of the city are held hostage because of similar flooding, citizens have raised questions regarding the work done by the concerned departments over the years to resolve this problem. A weather disturbance had led to rains and thunderstorms in several parts of the state, including the capital city over the last few days.
The medium to heavy rains in the city on Wednesday first filled the drainage system of the city to its full capacity, and thereafter caused them to overflow. This led to the beginning of the flooding issue in the city. And when the rains continued on Thursday, they were no longer in a position to handle the water, leading to massive urban flooding on Friday.
