Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Adjusts Schedule to Avoid Clash with Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra

GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma has made adjustments to his official schedule in the upper districts of the state, postponing events on January 18-19 to prevent clashes with the Congress' Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra. Sarma emphasized the need to avoid logistical conflicts and maintained that his decision aimed at ensuring the smooth execution of both political activities.

The Chief Minister specifically deferred his Majuli program and canceled ration card distribution events in Jorhat and Dergaon during the mentioned period. Sarma clarified that the scheduling of welfare activities preceded the announcement of Rahul Gandhi's yatra and denied allegations that it was a deliberate attempt to disrupt the Congress' campaign!

"I have canceled all my programs in upper Assam on January 18 and January 19, which were declared a month ago. You cannot get a more large-hearted government," Sarma asserted during a press conference! He further addressed Congress' claims about the clash in dates, stating, "Rather, as a gesture, I have canceled my Majuli program on January 18 so that it does not clash with Rahul Gandhi's event."

Responding to Union Home Minister Amit Shah's proposed visit on January 20, Sarma assured that efforts would be made to prevent any overlap with the ongoing yatra. The Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra is set to cover 833 km across 17 districts of Assam, commencing from Sivasagar on January 18.

Sarma also commented on the perceived public sentiment towards Congress, claiming that attendance at their gatherings has dwindled. He specifically pointed out the 'Miya Muslims' community, asserting that even they are reluctant to attend Congress meetings. The Chief Minister, however, maintained that his government works for the benefit of all communities. 

Furthermore, Sarma alleged that the Congress yatra is promoting an anti-Hindu agenda, stating, "You (Congress) are anti-Hindu and we are pro-Hindu. However, we are also not anti-Muslim or anti-Christian or against any community." Despite political differences, he emphasized the government's commitment to the welfare of every community. In summary, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's decision to adjust his schedule reflects an effort to maintain political decorum and prevent clashes between official activities and the ongoing Congress yatra in upper Assam.
