GUWAHATI: With just two days days left for the celebration of Independence Day, the Commissioner of Police and the District Commissioner of Kamrup Metro addressed the media regarding the preparations at the War Memorial in Dighalipukhuri on Saturday.

City Commissioner of Police, Diganta Barah highlighted the enthusiasm with which things are being put in readiness for the upcoming celebration and he detailed a series of programs planned for celebrating the 75th Independence Day.

The city is being decked-up with the colours of the tricolour, especially the area around the High Court, Dighalipukhuri, Cotton University and all the main roads in Central Guwahati.

An innovative initiative has been launched under the banner of the campaign "Meri Mati Meri Desh," which has been launched to symbolise unity. Soil will be collected from villages in various districts across Assam, to be brought together in Guwahati and then transported to New Delhi. There, the soil from different parts of the Assam will serve as the foundation for a park on Kartavya Path, showcasing the state’s contribution to the nation's progress.

In addition to this, the soil will also be utilised in the construction of the Kanaklata Barua University in Gohpur.

To promote the spirit of patriotism and unity, a campaign titled "Har Ghar Tiranga" has been initiated, with every household urged to proudly display the national flag.

CP Barah made a passionate appeal to the public to join hands in this endeavor, helping in fostering a strong sense of national identity.

It should be mentioned here that Assam has organized a week-long celebration of the event, at the behest of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s call for the same.

The pitch for Independence Day fervour is set to reach its zenith with the holding of a grand march- past event scheduled for Sunday, August 13. The parade will commence at 4:30 PM from Latasil Field, then will traverse through Lamb Road, passing the District Library, Handique College, Cotton College, and Nehru Park, to culminate amidst a grand fanfare at the iconic War Memorial in Dighalipukhuri.

The parade will witness the participation of Assam Police personnel, National Cadet Corps (NCC) cadets, and talented sports personalities from the state along with a special performance by the Air Force band, slated to be followed by a light and sound show at the War Memorial. Practice runs were organized on Saturday in the area, leading to traffic congestions. But people did not mind as it was all for the national cause of patriotism.

Certain measures for road closures and rerouting will be implemented in the area on Sunday afternoon to ensure the smooth conduct of these festivities.

Kamrup Metro District Commissioner, Pallav Gopal Jha, further mentioned that flags will be provided on behalf of the government to schools, colleges and all government institutions in light of Independence Day.

Meanwhile, Diganta Barah also asked the public to be especially alert about their surroundings and report any kind of anti-social or anti-national behaviour to the concerned authorities, who will be on hand.
