Guwahati: Female Constable of Assam Police Goes Missing, Suicide Suspected

Personnel belongings of Gayatri Hazarika including her mobile phone, slippers, glasses and a note were reportedly recovered from the Saraighat Bridge

GUWAHATI: A female constable with the Assam Police reportedly went missing after she jumped from the Saraighat Bridge into the Brahmaputra River. Identified as Gayatri Hazarika, the 26-year-old constable belonged to Barhampur in the Nagaon district of the state. A search and rescue operation is on its way for the recovery of this constable since Tuesday morning.

According to reports, she went missing on Monday night. Posted under the Paltan Bazar Police Station, she was assigned duties at the ongoing eviction at the Silsako beel. Although she had objected to the same, the seniors overlooked her concerns. This is being alleged by many as the cause for her jumping into the mighty Brahmaputra river. She was reportedly assigned for four days of eviction duty at the Silsako Beel but did not report for duty on any of those days at the location.

Personnel belongings of Gayatri Hazarika including her mobile phone, slippers, glasses and a note were reportedly recovered from the Saraighat Bridge on the morning of Tuesday, raising doubts regarding a suicide.

The family members of the constable mentioned that she failed to respond to their calls on Monday night. Thereafter they received a call mentioning the recovery of the mobile phone and other items at 5 AM on Tuesday from the Saraighat Flyover. Soon after the call, the family members travelled to Guwahati from Nagaon. Gayatri Hazarika has her mother, a brother and a sister.

As the search and rescue mission is now underway, no comment has been made officially regarding the incident. But the high volume of water in the Brahmaputra river because of the monsoon rains, drastically decreases the chances of her survival in case she had jumped into the Brahmaputra.

More details are awaited regarding the incident.
