GUWAHATI: The Central Police District of the Guwahati Police Commissionerate has passed a prohibitory order on the bursting of crackers in the locality near the Guwahati Refinery, Oil India Pumping Station and the Oil pipelines in the district.
The order mentioned that the locality near the refinery and the Oil India pumping station is at heavy risk from fireworks and crackers as the same area has huge quantities of highly volatile and inflammable petroleum products. The same is true about the pipelines passing through the Central Police District of the city.
In order to avoid any possibility of fire, and there is every livelihood of imminent danger to the safety and security of the residents of the region, the Deputy Commissioner of Police for the Central Police District, Amitabh Basumatary has banned the use of fireworks and bursting of crackers etc. within 500 meters radius from the Guwahati Refinery, Noonmati, Oil India Pumping Station, Satgaon and Oil Pipelines within Central Guwahati Police District.
He also prohibited the use of fireworks and bursting of crackers within the Silence Zones of Central Guwahati Police District. He mentioned that this order comes into force with immediate effect. Any person contravening the order will be punishable under section 188 of the Indian Penal Code.
Previously, in a press conference held in Guwahati, Commissioner of Police Diganta Barah urged the residents to revel in the festivities of Diwali and Kali Puja while strictly adhering to guidelines set by the administration. Barah emphasized that disobedience of the prescribed rules would be dealt with sternly. Expressing optimism about the enthusiastic celebration of the festivals, Barah highlighted the importance of following guidelines established by the Supreme Court and Kamrup district administration. He specifically addressed the ban on crackers containing barium nitrate, permitting only the use of green crackers as defined by the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI).
