Guwahati: An electric vehicle charging booth has been installed by the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) at the parking area of Mahabahu Brahmaputra River Heritage Center in Guwahati. Meanwhile, in a major initiative to boost the EV environment and tackle pollution, the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) had sanctioned a total of 89 EVCS (Electric Vehicle Charging Stations) for three northeastern states. From the total 89 Electric Vehicle charging stations, 20 were installed in Assam with ten each in the two major cities of Guwahati and Jorhat. This initiative falls under the second phase of the FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicle) scheme of the Indian government to reduce the use of Diesel and Petrol-powered vehicles in India. The MHI had issued an official statement regarding its instalment of 89 EV charging stations in different cities of the 3 states in the northeast. As mentioned in the official statement, the ministry had sanctioned 20 Electric Vehicle Charging Stations for Assam, 40 for Meghalaya and 29 for Sikkim. In Meghalaya, the centre had installed all the 40 EVCS in the capital city of Shillong and a total of 29 EVCS in Sikkim had been installed in the state's capital city Gangtok. It may be mentioned that in compliance with the Ministry of Power guidelines there will be one EV charging station at every 25 kilometres on both sides of the Highway. Moreover, there will be one EVCS for long-range and heavy-duty electric vehicles at every 100 kilometres on both sides of the Highway.
