Guwahati HC Chief Justice To Take Oath In Raj Bhawan

GUWAHATI: Justice Sandeep Mehta will now hold the position of Chief Justice of Guwahati High Court. Justice Mehta is scheduled to take his oath on 15th of February, Wednesday. The official reach Assam’s Guwahati city on Tuesday, to complete the proceedings. 

As per sources, Justice Sandeep Mehta will address the oath taking ceremony in Durbar Hall of Raj Bhawan. The oath taking ceremony is scheduled to take place at 5:30 pm in the mentioned location. 

Prof. Jagdish Mukhi will also be present at the ceremony. The official was appointed in the position of Chief Justice of Guwahati HC on 12th of February, Sunday. Mehta has replaced Justice RM Chhaya, who completed his tenure as the Chief Justice in Guwahati and got retired from the post, recently. 

Ever since then, the position was vacant in the court. It is worth mentioning here that, Justice Mehta served as a senior judge in Rajasthan High Court, following his appointment in 2011, 30th May. As per the reports, the official will retire in the year 2025, on 10th of January. His appointment came after the reference made by the Supreme Court Collegium. 

The Collegium initially recommended the name of Justice K Vinod Chandran for the position of Chief Justice of Guwahati High Court, but after a series of discussions it altered the name to Justice Sandeep Mehta. Justice K Vinod Chandran is now appointed as the Chief Justice of High Court of Judicature, Patna. Notably, Justice Mehta has been serving as an advocate from the year 1986. 

Apart from that, Justice Mehta also was the chairman of Bar Council Of Rajasthan in the year 2010, and vice chairman between the year 2004-2005. He practised his advocacy in trial court, high court as well supreme court, making him a perfect fit for the position.

Recently, the state administration got its new DGP, GP Singh, replacing the former Director General of Police, Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta. GP Singh held the position from 1st February, 2023, and the announcement was made by CM Himanta Biswa Sarma.
