Guwahati Municipal Corporation Cracks Down on Illegal Meat and Fish Shops

GUWAHATI: Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) initiated a crackdown against a significant number of illegal meat and fish shops scattered across various parts of the city. This decisive move, carried out on a Wednesday, targeted a total of 61 illicit establishments operating in areas such as Bharalumukh, Bhutnath, Kamakhya Gate, and Pandu.

Sources report that the municipal authorities took swift action against these unauthorized shops, promptly canceling their licenses and imposing hefty fines amounting to Rs. 32,500 for their unlawful operations. This resolute action underscores the GMC's commitment to upholding public health and safety within the city.

This recent operation follows a similarly rigorous effort in the month of July when the GMC undertook an operation against several sweet shops and factories within Guwahati. Shockingly, during this inspection, it was discovered that some shopkeepers had been selling sweets that were infested with flies, raising significant concerns about hygiene and food safety.

In this operation, GMC officials meticulously inspected seven sweet shops, where they found the proprietors selling their products with flies crawling on them. As a consequence of these violations, the GMC decided to seal one particular establishment, Delight Sweet Shop, which is located on AT Road. The closure was deemed necessary due to the severe compromise to public health and the blatant violation of hygiene standards, both of which posed a substantial risk to the health and safety of consumers.

The GMC's proactive stance toward safeguarding public health is further underscored by the substantial fines imposed on businesses found to be jeopardizing public well-being. In total, GMC levied fines amounting to Rs. 75,000 on multiple establishments that were discovered to be operating with invalid trade licenses.

This crackdown on illegal meat and fish shops, along with the previous operation targeting unhygienic sweet shops, reflects the GMC's unwavering dedication to ensuring that businesses operating within Guwahati adhere to the highest standards of hygiene and public health. By canceling licenses, imposing fines, and sealing establishments that pose health risks, the GMC sends a clear message that it will not tolerate any compromises when it comes to the well-being of the city's residents.
