Guwahati: Night Ferry Services Suspended Because of Rise in Water Level

GUWAHATI: The water levels of the Brahmaputra River have seen a sudden rise in the last few days. As a part of the safety precautions, the Inland Water Transport Department of the state has decided to suspend ferry services at night.

This announcement mentioned that the services will be halted from the afternoon of Friday until any further orders are issued by the authorities. This order is valid for all ferry services between North Guwahati and Guwahati. The Inland Water Transport Department mentioned the sudden rise in the water level as the main cause of the suspension of the services.

The daytime services however will continue as before meaning that ferries will be available till 6:30 PM.

Meanwhile, with four rivers, including the Brahmaputra, flowing above their danger levels, the flood situation in the state has deteriorated compared to the situation in the past few days. According to the evening bulletin of the CWC (Central Water Commission), the Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger levels at Neamatighat in the Jorhat district, the Dikhou River at Sivasagar in the Sivasagar district, the Disang River at Nanglamuraghat in the Sivasagar district, and the Dhansiri river at Numaligarh in the Golaghat district.

The bulletin further said that the Brahmaputra is maintaining a rising trend in Neamatighat, Tezpur, Goalpara, and Dhubri. The mighty river is steady in Dibrugarh and Guwahati. According to the ASDMA (Assam State Disaster Management Authority), the deluge affected 175 villages in six districts in the state today. The districts are Darrang, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Jorhat, and Sivasagar. The report also said that the floods have affected as many as 26,964 people, with Dhemaji facing the worst wrath of the deluge, affecting 19,163 people. Two relief camps are operational in Sivasagar district, where 435 affected people are taking shelter.
